roach and I were talking in the Trader Joe's thread about some cheap wines you can get there so I wanted to have a thread where people can tell us about a particular wine they buy and whether they like it or not. Dark wines are said to be healthful so I thought the Health and Fitness Room was the place for this.

My favorite is Beringer White Zinfandel for those of you who like a sweet wine. Wine snobs look down on fruity wines and prefer those with a different taste. Wine snobs are welcome here too. I've wanted to try some non-fruity wines as well.

Today I bought a Shiraz from Yellow Tail and paid $6.65 for it. That's the Australian wine maker with the picture of the kangaroo on the front. I'll give a review once I have tasted it.

I think you will enjoy the Yellow Tail Shiraz. Really good for the price. I think you will find your palate will change as you try more and different wines.

I am by no means a wine snob, but we like to go to different wine bars and try new wines. I will be happy to give some thoughts on some to try.

Remember that any idiot can find a good $50+ bottle of wine, the fun is finding a really good $10 bottle.

Like the idea of this thread. I've been meaning to give up beer for a while and find some quality wines. Keep 'em coming!

Bolla Bardolino at 8 or 9 bucks is a nice red.
Sonoma Cutrer is one of my more favorite cheap chardonnays.

That's what I'm hoping for, my palate to change. I feel I'm short-changing myself by buying sweet wines only.

I've heard that unless a person has a trained palate that anything spent over $15 is a waste. Unless you have a trained palate you won't be able to tell the difference between a good $15 bottle of wine and a really good $50 bottle of wine.

Fuck. Now I'm going to get a flood of suggestions and I'll turn into a wino.

:puppy:

I'll be sure to put those 2 on the list.

Im not a wine expert but a had a wine from Greg Norman. It's Pinot Noir and it's around 12 a bottle. This stuff is great really liked it and got a nice buzz from it. As for the Yellow Tail Shiraz I cant drink that stuff. Drank a whole bottle 1 night LOL and threw up the next day for like 6 hours straight. So its no way for Yellow Tail Shiraz. But if you want a nice wine try that Pinot Noir from Greg Norman

Here a some good cheap reds - now these aren't my favs but they are good everyday drinking wines.

Red Diamond Cab from Washington
5 Reds by Oakley (it's a blend)
Little Penguin Merlot (I'm not a Merlot fan though)

Someone above said they like sweeter wines - forget shit white zin (not to sound like a snob but it's shit) - try a reisling (most are from Germany) - if you want super sweet try an ice wine though they ain't cheap

I don't really know alot of Chilean or Argentinian wines but they will be values there - and to those that think you can just pay $50 or more and get a good wine - bullshit - I can't tell you how many expensive wines I have thrown out - I once threw away a $70 bought of Amarone - to those looking for a great wine try an Amarone but pay for a good one - it's an Italian why where they let the grapes dry out in the sun.

Here's my review of the Yellow Tail Shiraz:

This wine has a really nice taste to it but has a bit of a tannic (bitter) aftertaste to it. In a way it's good in the fact that it made me drink the wine slower. If you don't mind a bit of an aftertaste then you should like the taste of this wine. It's bouquet is pleasant but not very strong.

I will do my best not to come off like some wine snob ass hole in this post. Anyone that tells you there is no difference between a good $15 bottle and a good $50 bottle, even to an unrefined palate is lying. That isn't to say there aren't good bottles of wine under $20, there are many. There are also many bottles over $50 that aren't very good.

Thing to remember with wine is that it is all personal preference, whatever varietal, vintage and producer you like is all up to you. That is why it is tough to give advice on wine, what I like may not be what you like. Personally, I would only cook with most of the wine they sell at Trader Joe's. They have made a conscious decision to sell low priced wine and there probably is some decent stuff there.

I think BevMo (www.bevmo.com) has a better selection and equally good prices. They also have a large selection of affordable wines and great deals on wines. One of their sales is buy one bottle and get the second for a penny. Not everything in the store, but typically a lot of their $20 and under bottles. They are all over California. I buy most of my stuff there, from K&L (www.klwines.com) and Wine Club (www.thewineclub.com). K&L is located in Redwood City and just opened a store in LA, Wine Club is in SF, San Jose and Santa Ana. Both stores have great prices and amazing selection.

Under $20 bottles that I like

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc ~$12 at Costco
Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc - I think it is under $10
Lawson's Dry Hills Sauv - ~$12
Rosenblum Vintner's Cuvee Zinfandel ~$8-9
Falesco Vitiano Umbria ~$9
Coppola Claret ~$14
Mark West Pinot Noir - they have one that is like $10, most of their Pinots are good.
E Guigal Cote du Rhone ~$10-12
Franciscan Oakville Cab ~$20

I don't tend to buy and drink my wine right away, I typically lay it down for a while, depending on the quality and type of wine. The tannins tend to mellow over time, so consider laying it down for a year or two before drinking. You may find that you like the wine better. If you are serious, you should keep tasting notes to compare what you thought say two years ago against the same bottle. It will give you an idea how long you may want to lay down future vintages of the same wine. You should also store your wine properly, fluctuating temperatures ruins wine and warmer than ideal temperatures (53-58 being ideal) will age wine quicker. Plus, once you start drinking wine at appropriate temps (53-58 for red and, depending on the varietal of white, colder), you won't want to drink it at the room temp that most people serve reds.

Mad Dog is always my first choice. If I have to go different, I choose Red Muscadine from Altus Arkansas
